GMAT Exam Structure

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) evaluates your analytical, quantitative, verbal, and reasoning skills. The exam lasts about 3 hours and 7 minutes (excluding optional breaks) and is divided into four sections:

1. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Task: Write an essay analyzing an argument
  • Purpose: Tests critical thinking and ability to express ideas clearly

2. Integrated Reasoning (IR)

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Questions: 12
  • Purpose: Measures how well you evaluate information from multiple sources (graphs, tables, texts, etc.)

3. Quantitative Reasoning

  • Duration: 62 minutes
  • Questions: 31
  • Purpose: Tests problem-solving and data sufficiency skills
  • Math Level: Based on high school mathematics (algebra, arithmetic, geometry, word problems)

4. Verbal Reasoning

  • Duration: 65 minutes
  • Questions: 36
  • Purpose: Tests reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and grammar (sentence correction)

5. Scoring

  • Total Score Range: 200–800
  • Sections Scored Separately:
    • AWA: 0–6
    • IR: 1–8
    • Quantitative: 6–51
    • Verbal: 6–51
